It’s near impossible to find any part of the world that hasn’t been affected by the latest advances in information technology. As the World Wide Web is being transformed into what’s roughly being called an information “cloud”, every industry is being dramatically altered. The medical industry is not immune and in fact is benefiting as more and more people are entering through online degree programs.

This information is touching everything in health care from microbiology to storing public health records. The archiving of these records is essential when a doctor has to make a life-or-death diagnosis. In turn, the person on the front line of archiving all this knowledge is the Medical Records and Health Information Technician. They are the people who directly store, retrieve and manipulate that data for health officials.

In essence, these technicians are responsible for the maintenance of medical history, symptoms, examination results, diagnostic tests, treatment methods, and all other healthcare provider services for their patients. They ensure the quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security of each patient’s data. They also communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information.

The main cause of this change is called electronic health records. All records were once stored on paper, but no more. These days paper is only as final backups. All data is stored electronically. Thus the tech’s job includes a highly sophisticated knowledge of applications and data bases. It should also be noted that, depending on the size of the institution, the pool of data being generated and stored is forcing the techs to end up specializing in the kind of information they are responsible for. A hospital can have one group just doing cancer, another handling insurance reimbursements, and then another on child care.

A person interested in the field only needs an Associates degree to find employment. The degree core should include medical terminology, health data standards, coding systems, data analysis, database security and management. It’s been advised that secondary school students who want to go this way to take basic classes in biology, math, chemistry, health, and computer science by their senior year.

After graduating college, it’s time to find a job and get the necessary one to two years worth of experience under one’s belt. Then it’s time to prepare for a certification exam. Even after passing, the nonstop advances in the field make getting recertification and continuing education a part of the job.

A very popular way to get one’s degree and certification is to take courses online. This makes incredible sense as the courses can be done around a busy student’s personal schedule. The classes can also provide hands-on simulations for a number of software applications from the comfort of one’s home.

One thing that’s interesting is there’s a very wide difference in salaries, depending on who hires you. A private practice tends to average $26,000 a year. In contrast, the federal government averages over $42,000. All come with excellent benefits packages. One thing that should be noted is the profession also has Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs, and earning those degrees can increase one’s income tremendously.

With the need for continuing education, those who get an online college degree are already quite familiar with college degrees online. Those who proceed with their medical assistant degrees will find this works to their advantage as it is seldom one of these busy professionals can take a leave just to study.

Since the advent of the Web, voluntary education for the military has experienced many changes. Service members are enjoying the ease of use of obtaining online degrees to pursue their educational objectives. In fact, the number of military service members going to online colleges has increased from five percent to more than 70 percent. To assist them, the Armed Forces have set up “educational centers” on just about everywhere there is a U.S. base throughout the world.

When one thinks about it, it makes perfect sense. Advancing a soldiers’s education is a good way for non-comms to advance to specialist ranks and officers climb up the advancement ladder. No matter what, this form of education increases a soldier’s chances of a satisfying career when returning to full civilian life.

Most important, is with these centers, a soldier can continue his education wherever he or she’s stationed. This includes anywhere from the hot zones of the Middle East to a float in the Arctic Circle. Both the four services and their servicemen get an added advantage in that if the soldier gets orders to pack up and go to a new assignment, they can continue their education once they are allowed to plug back in.

As for getting the financial aid needed to take these courses? It turns out the government can be quite generous in this area. Each education center usually comes with a financial officer. His job is to help point out the number of programs that are available to non-comms and officers alike.

A primary source of funding is called TA/DANTES(Tuition Assistance/Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Services). Many times, this funding can cover as much as 100% of tuition as well as put in a healthy stipend for text books and software. Created by the government in 1974, DANTES is dedicated to helping members of every branch achieve their professional and personal educational objectives.

Another major source of funding are the online universities themselves. A number of online universities will reduce their tuition as much as 50% to active military, as well as offer discounts to their spouses. To find this out, it is a good idea to see if the school offers the appropriate educational program, then ask them about these tuition discounts. A large majority of the top schools do offer them.

Finally, there are private grants available to active soldiers. These military grants are usually dependent on what field the soldier intends to study in, his/her military background (combat duty, family background, previous educational experience) and/or plans when leaving the armed services (such as going into domestic civil service). The base financial officer is usually one’s best guide in finding these grants out.

What really matters is these days the military is not only a good place to advance one’s education, but also to get the student loans needed to further those goals. Any soldier worth his stripes or brass should march on down to their educational center to find out more about these veteran education benefits and scholarships and grants

Tuition, living expenses, books and food; college costs, a lot. You may have thought getting accepted was the hard part, only to find paying for your education is an even bigger challenge. Don’t despair, the Federal Government is a multi-billion dollar resource for college students in need of financial aid. Uncle Sam has grants, loans and work-study programs available to students who need a little help.

A grant is the cheapest form of financial aid, because you don’t have to repay it.
Pell Grants are awarded based on a student’s financial need. There are also grants given based on a college student’s course of study. The first step to getting a grant is to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA. Nearly all two and four-year colleges and universities use the FAFSA to award federal and state financial aid.

If you don’t fit the financial need requirements, a loan may be the way to go. Federal loans offer borrowers lower interest rates and have more flexible repayment plans than many banks. Through the same FAFSA your school will inform you about various loan choices and your eligibility.

Colleges and universities usually participate in the Federal Family Education Loan, FFEL, or the Direct Loan Program. Under the Direct Loan Program, the money is sent directly from the federal government to the school. Funds for a FFEL come from a bank, credit union, or other lender. Many institutions offer students a list of banks they use, but you may also research your source.

Loans can top $12,000 a year through the FFEL or the direct loan programs with interest rates below four percent. How much money a student can borrow is determined by how many years of college they’ve completed as well as their financial need. When you apply for a loan, you have to sign legal documents outlining the amount borrowed and the terms for repayment. The type of loan also helps determine when interest has to be paid.

Under both the Direct Loan and FFEL programs, the money goes straight to your school. The loan pays for tuition, housing and other school charges, first. You can get any leftover cash or give the school permission to hold the money for future expenses. First year students don’t get their loan checks until 30 days into the school year. The delay is a way to protect you from having repay a loan in case you don’t start school or drop out within the first month of class.

Besides grants and loans, the federal government also offers a work-study program. Students get jobs or do community service related to their major. The student’s earnings help pay for their education. Work-study students can work on or off-campus. Non-profit groups and public agencies are often sites for work-study programs.

Even if you’re already enrolled in college degrees, there is still help available. Uncle Sam has over 100 billion dollars for college students in need of financial aid. All it takes is one application for federal assistance to put you on the road to gaining accredited degree, a loan or a work-study job that can help pay your way through school.

Extra time is not something most working mothers have in excess. So anything that can save time while improving their family life is a bonus. For these multi-tasking moms, seeking an online degree may save time and money. Many working mothers are finding online courses are a great way to squeeze a college education into their schedule. And that college degree could mean a better paying job.

Online colleges hold many benefits, especially for the working woman. The flexibility to complete a degree this way, on your own schedule, allows mothers to squeeze classes in after work when the kids are asleep. Unlike traditional universities, online colleges do not require a set course load. That means students who choose this course can take as many or as few classes as they want. For a working mother that could mean attending class during a work break and doing their homework with their kids

The New Jersey Department of Labor started a program to help working mothers increase their education and skills. A Rutgers University study on that program found the women who finished had on average increased their annual income by 14%. Most importantly, the women said they could not have completed the courses if they would have had to leave home to do it.

The census report found there are more than 10 million single mothers in the United States. Only 16% of those single moms have college degrees and 78% earn less than $30,000 a year. Based on those numbers, you can see having a job does not guarantee financial stability. According to the US Department of Labor, the poverty rate for single working mother households is 21%. That’s more than double the rate of families headed by men and four times the rate of married couples with children. That may be why more people are looking for ways to increase their job qualifications.

Three online universities have partnered to grant scholarships to working moms. American Intercontinental University, DeVry University and Walden University began a campaign called, “Project Working Mom: Putting Education to Work”. The program grants at least $2 million in full-ride scholarships to working moms.

Federal Grants are another way to get money for college. Uncle Sam may have as much as $50,000 to donate to your education. Since you don’t have to repay a grant, it’s like free money for school. A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, FSEOG, provides up to $4,000 a year to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Don’t forget to check out state grants and scholarships from private sources.

If you want to attend an online college or university, a little research can save you money. For example, instead of buying text books at the school’s bookstore, buy them used online. Your school may offer you a discount if you refer a friend. If your friend takes a class on your recommendation, you get a break on tuition. The American Council on Education also evaluates converting military or employee training into college credit. Or, you may be able to test out of classes required for your degree. You may already be on your way to a degree, before you take your first class.

If you want to go to college, don’t let limited time or money stand in your way. Online college is a way to get your degree on a schedule you can handle. No need to live in a dorm or attend night classes, you choose when you learn. The Federal Government has single mother grants and grants for online college available to help you pay for your education. And if you are a working mother, there are programs designed just for you. Online college and grants for college could be the key to getting a degree without sacrificing time with your family.

Being a single parent isn’t easy. Trying to juggle children and a job is twice as difficult when you don’t have the physical, much less emotional, support of a spouse to share the workload. As for taking classes to advance one’s place in life?

Most single mothers realize sooner or later the knee biters will grow up and fly the coop. That’s why many of them start going to online colleges. This way when the kids go off to start their own lives, the mom can now start hunting for a more life-fulfilling job. If that isn’t enough, there are certain perks that come with obtaining a degree online that most parents, single or otherwise, get that make an online education superior to going on campus. These include:

1) An online mom can study from home. Simply register, take the course load and eventually graduate from the comfort of home. You are always nearby when your child scrapes his/her knee, needs to be fed or put to bed, or even needs help with his/her homework.

Then you can set your own pace. If the kids are so young that they need more supervision than their elder siblings or friends, you can decrease the workload to suit that pace. Many programs allow for part-time students. It may take a little longer before you get that online degree, but real life, aka raising your kids, still set the pace. This way you can match it.

3) Financial aid is available. Not just tuition and fees, but also things like rent, food and clothing. Sites list such aid as: Teacher Education Assistance, Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, National SMART Grant, Institutional Grants, Campus Based Aid (FSEOG, FWS, Perkins Loans); Stafford Loans (FEFL, Direct Loan), Plus Loans just for starters.

4) Cut commuting. You save not only time, but cost, by not having to commute. By studying at home instead of going back and forth from home to work to campus, you cut the costs by approximately one third. That’s more time to both study and look after the kids.

A good place to start is a site like Single Moms. Learn both the advantages and obstacles that are coming. Pick up tips on the kind of degree you want to pursue, which schools offer them and help on getting financial aid. From there, phone and call the school. Try to get in touch with registration and financial aid officers, if only to see what you can get.

The important point is to do some homework about scholarships and grants before you decide to study from home. Many grants for single mothers and college loans are available. Line up the ducks and the advantages of going to an online campus will then all fall in line. Before you know it, the kids will grow up and before you can say “empty nest syndrome” you are well on your way with a new career with a degree.

Earning an online degree is right for you

With so many people choosing to obtain a degree, it is vital to weigh your options. Perhaps you’ve considered going to school, but you’re not sure you can commit the time or financial expenses associated. If you have not considered online college, some of these reasons that may make it the perfect fit for you.

Researching your options is always important, and receiving an online degree is just one alternative to an on-campus experience. The best educational path for you is the one you feel most comfortable and confident with.

Taking online courses is optimal for someone looking for a path of convenience. You can set aside time to learn at your own pace, when you’re feeling the most focused and ready to work. This is also great for working professionals looking to take classes when they are able, no matter the time of day or night, and still continue their work routine without interruption.

Having control over your learning experience is a major benefit of online courses. Aside from time management, you are able to work at your own pace. You don’t have to wait for an instructor to take the lead. You can also take more time on any particular aspect of the course that you may be having trouble with, or that requires a bit more focus and concentration. Perhaps parts of the course you are less than familiar with.

Getting feedback from instructors and fellow students with great immediacy is another benefit to taking online courses. These interactive aspects are not as often found in a traditional classroom setting, where you may be lost in a sea of students in a large lecture hall. Being connected and receiving individualized attention with the professor and students at various levels can aid you in the learning process.

Cost. Online courses are usually less expensive than their on-campus counterparts. If you aren’t able financially to pursue a full degree program, this can be a great alternative.
