The public library may also be a great resource that you can use for free. If you have looked online and have found a book you really like but cannot or do not want to pay for a new copy, see if your library has it. Many times you can search their inventory from home to make sure they have the book you want.

Learning a new language will take time so be patient with yourself and work hard. A good study area is also a great idea. There are usually many distractions for someone studying at home, so find a different location if you need to.

Maybe you already have a trip planned to China and wanting to learn Mandarin was an afterthought. Go ahead and go on your trip even if you have not learned all or anything about the language. Remember to take a dictionary so you have some kind of reference and are not totally lost. Use your plane ride to absorb as much of the language as you can. After you arrive, learn as much as you can from the people you meet. Knowing the culture and some key words from your languages courses may make your learning after the trip even easier and more enjoyable.
